Our Local Area

The area around Lonsdale Park is full of things to see and do.

For those who enjoy walking there is the Lake District National Park the north of which is only about 40 minutes drive away, and the fells are well worth a visit if you can tear yourself away!

Local walks include Gelt Woods, an RSPB reserve just 8 miles from the site, which also features a lovely sandstone quarry - look carefully and you'll see some graffiti from a 3rd century Roman soldier!

The Eden Valley is also close by, and was recently featured on ITV's 'The adventuer's guide to Britain'. It is also home to otters, salmon fishing, and some great archaeological sites.

A bit further afield but well within driving distance are the Scottish Borders and the famous Gretna Green - Lonsdale has even hosted several wedding recpetions where guests have 'been hooked' at Gretna!

We particularly enjoy visiting the victorian Seaside resort of Silloth (where the best fish and chips you will ever eat can be found) and the beautiful and barely known beach of Allonby - actually one of the Independents top 10 UK beaches!

Closer to home is the Historic city Carlisle and the Lanes shopping centre, where you can also find the excellent Tullie House Museum which features natural history and local history galleries - including some excellent Roman exhibits.

For those with in an interest in Roman history we're close to Hadrian's Wall, Roman forts and museums

Famous Hadrians Wall, close by

Other historical museums close by include Beamish the open air museum and the Solway Aviation Museum

Leisure sites well worth a visit are the Superb local golf courses and Maryport Aquarium
